The Netscape browser-suite (Netscape Communicator) was born out of Mosaic -- the NCSA Web browser that started it all. Netscape Communicator enjoyed browser market dominance until Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) knocked Netscape off the Windows Desktop.
Netscape 4.x remains the dominant Linux and UNIX Web browser. So far the Linux distributors have rejected the new Mozilla-based renditions of Netscape 6 (Netscape 6.0 and Netscape 6.01). AOL/Timer-Warner's Netscape division is expected to release Netscape 6.5 in Q4 2001.
Both Netscape 6 (6.0, 6.01, and 6.5) and the Mozilla browser use the Gecko layout engine to render Web pages. Netscape's core Web browser modules include the core Mozilla browser, e-mail and news clients, and Composer clients.
Composer is the free, open source, HTML editor and Web authoring module of the Netscape 6 and Mozilla browser-suites. Netscape Composer helps you to create and to edit Web page, e-mail, and text-content-oriented documents easily.
Netscape builds (binaries) are available for the Linux, Macintosh, Microsoft Windows, and UNIX platforms. You can download Netscape 4 and Netscape 6 (Netscape 6.0 and Netscape 6.01) from the Netscape FTP site at no charge.
Netscape 6 lets you change themes and skins. You can create your own Netscape 6 skins and themes or download Netscape 6 themes and skins.
