Linux kernel 2.6.12 Mandriva 2006 Released to Public -- But Now It's Mandrake + Conectiva + Lycoris
Mike Angelo -- 13 October 2005 (C)[Updated 14 October 2006]
In an e-mail message to MozillaQuest Magazine the Mandriva Team notes: Mandriva today unveils the new version of its operating system, merging pioneer technologies from Conectiva and Lycoris, as well as spanning for the first time a one-year release cycle. According to today's press release, Mandriva 2006 comes in three editions, "Discovery/Lx (for the Linux beginner), PowerPack (for the advanced computer user) and PowerPack+ (for SOHO users)" in both 32-bit and 64-bit distributions. It has been available to Mandriva Club members for several weeks now. Today marks the release of Mandriva 2006 to the public and to the retail channel. It appears the retail packs are not quit ready yet but Mandriva 2006 is available to everyone for paid downloading from Mandriva now. The free download version is not yet available. [However, please see Update Note below.] The retail packs are expected to be ready in about a week and the free download version is expected to be available in a few weeks. We have not tried Mandriva Linux 2006 yet. But we have tried and used Mandriva Limited Edition 2005 extensively and we like it! We rated Mandriva Linux LE 2005 as a good desktop Linux. For more about our rating Mandriva as a good desktop Linux, please see the articles in our In Pursuit of Good Desktop Linux series, Network Neighbor-hood and MS Windows Partitions and Ease of Use and Ease of Migration Overview -- KDE, GNOME, and MS Windows Desktops. A good place to get real-time help with Mandriva Linux is in the #Mandriva channel on EFNet IRC. There is a link to it in the Resources section at the end of this article. [Update Note: While the free edition of Mandriva 2006 CD and DVD ISOs are not available yet, you still can download a free version of Mandriva 2006. Here is a little tip and trick that Mandriva's Gaël Duval (founder of Mandriva Linux, originally Mandrake Linux) passed on to us in an e-mail discussion after we published this article.
You can look for the full install tree in the /pub/mirrors/mandrake/devel/2006.0/i586 (32-bit) and /pub/mirrors/mandrake/devel/2006.0/x86_64 (64-bit) paths on the Mandrake mirrors. The instructions will be at /pub/mirrors/mandrake/devel/2006.0/i586/install.htm (32-bit) and /pub/mirrors/mandrake/devel/2006.0/x86_64/install.htm (64-bit) on the Mandrake mirrors.
