MozillaQuest Christmas and Winter Holiday Gift Guide - 2005Give the Gift of Knoppix Linux and a Book for Less Than $30Knoppix for Dummies
Mike Angelo -- 22 December 2005 (C) -- Page 2
Why Choose Knoppix for Dummies? There are several books that include a Knoppix live CD or a live CD for some other Linux distribution. Here are some of the reasons we selected Knoppix for Dummies and its live DVD over these other books for our 2005 MozillaQuest Christmas and Winter Holiday Gift Guide. Knoppix for Dummies includes a live DVD rather than a live CD. Thus, the Knoppix for Dummies live DVD has so many more applications and utilities than do the CD books. The Knoppix for Dummies DVD is truly a complete computer system on a disc. The live CDs included with the other books are too limited and just are not complete computer systems. This is important because you cannot add additional applications, utilities, or other software to the live CDs -- unless you want to spin your own live CD or DVD. Thus you have just so many more software choices included with the Knoppix for Dummies live DVD than you do with the live CDs included with other live CD books. The Knoppix for Dummies live DVD is more current than the live CDs included with the other books we considered, The Knoppix live DVD is based on Knoppix 4.0, and includes OpenOffice 2.0 (beta), GIMP 2.2, KDE 3.4.1, and Konqueror 3.4.1. Thus it is pretty much current. Of course, an experienced computer user can download and burn a current Knoppix live CD or DVD to go along with other live CD books. However, doing that might be beyond the skills-set of a newbie or person not experienced with Linux. From a dollars and cents position we feel constrained to recommend a book that has a current live CD or live DVD so that the buyer of the book does not have to download and burn a current CD/DVD and then discard the outdated disc that comes with one of the other books. The Knoppix for Dummies live DVD is very KDE-centric. KDE, the K desktop environment, is the best Linux desktop environment and an integral part of a good desktop Linux. Also, in our opinion the simplest and easiest ways to browse Windows shares and LAN shares on a Linux-based computer are LinNeighborhood and SMB4K. LinNeighborhood is included with the Knoppix for Dummies live DVD. It also includes a Samba Network Neighborhood, which appears to be an implementation of SMB4K or something very similar to SMB4K. Moreover, LinNeighborhood and the Samba Network Neighborhood work very well and are very easy to use out of the box. For more about using LinNeighborhood please see our articles:
and Knoppix Is a Good Desktop LinuxOf the books and the included distros that we looked at, and the way they are configured on the accompanying live CDs, it seems that the Knoppix for Dummies live DVD comes closest to meeting our criteria for good desktop Linux. For more about what constitutes a good desktop Linux, please see the two articles so far in our Pursuit of Good Desktop Linux series: and Our primary Linux distro coverage focuses on Mandriva Linux and SUSE Linux, However, after trying Knoppix, we will add Knoppix to our set of primary Linux distros coverage. RecommendationThere are other live CD Linux distributions and other books about them and the Knoppix live CD/DVD Linux Distribution. We will take a closer look at other Knoppix books and other live CD books in another article. But for now, our recommendation is to grab Knoppix for Dummies or download the Knoppix Live DVD for yourself, and to give Knoppix for Dummies with its live Knoppix DVD for your Christmas or Winter holiday gifts -- or for any-occasion gifts. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays -- Mike Angelo
