Mike Angelo -- 4 August 2005 (C) -- Page 4
The deal-breaker for Xandros is that Xandros does not have the Konqueor Web browser in its distribution. Nor does Xandros make the Konqueror Web browser available for later addition to the Xandros installation. We believe the Konqueror Web browser is the best Web browser available today. Konqueror earned a MozillaQuest Magazine Editor's Choice award in December 2004. It is free and open source software (FOSS). And it is available for the Linux operating system. Thus we see absolutely no acceptable reason that Xandros should not include Konqueror in its Linux products, or at least make it available as an add-on through its Xandros Network software management system. MozillaQuest Magazine will not recommend a Linux distribution that does not include the Konqueror Web browser as part of the distribution. In today's analysis of what makes a good Desktop Linux in terms of (a) easy access to MS Windows directories and files on the local computer -- out-of-the-box and (b) easy access to shared files and devices on other computers on a LAN out-of-the-box, both Xandros and Mandriva make the cut. However, because Xandros does not include the Konqueror Web browser, we do not consider it a good desktop Linux at this time. MozillaQuest Magazine will be taking a closer look at the Xandros, Mandriva, and other GNU-Linux distributions in upcoming articles. But for now, when it comes to looking for a good desktop Linux, Mandriva is in first place. The Xandros Linux distro not including the Konqueror Web browser is one reason that one might not know a good desktop Linux when one sees it. At first sight, when you look at the Xandros Linux distro, it looks like a great desktop Linux. But then when you take a deeper look and find that it does not include Konqueror, Xandros does not seem as though it is such a good desktop Linux. And of course that is one of those relative issues. If you prefer another Web browser, you might not have the same point of view. In the meantime, you can download free versions of Mandriva, Xandros and the other Linux distros that we have been looking at and see for yourself how you like them. Links are in the Resources section below.
Will Mandriva stay in the lead as the best desktop Linux available? How do other Linux distributions match up against Mandriva and Xandros on other measures of what makes a good desktop Linux? MozillaQuest Magazine will take a look at how they do measure up in future articles. Stay tuned!
