SuSE Linux 8.0 Set for April 22 Release7 April 2002SuSE Linux plans to release its SuSE Linux 8.0 operating system (OS) distribution on 22 April 2002. Along with Caldera, Mandrake, and Red Hat, SuSE is one of the four leading Linux OS distributions. SuSE Linux 8.0 is expected to ship with the new Linux 2.4.18 kernel. You should be able to buy the shiny, shrink-wrapped package at retail stores or directly from SuSE on 22 April. It should be available for downloading on the SuSE FTP site and mirrors then also. This is a change from the pattern for previous SuSE releases where there was a delay of about two to three weeks after SuSE went on sale before it was available for free downloading. Another SuSE release-pattern change is that both the English and German versions will be released on the same date. According to the SuSE Linux 8.0 Press Release and other SuSE information, SuSE Linux 8.0 includes both the GNOME 1.4.1 RC1 and KDE (K Desktop Environment) 3.0 windows-like desktops. Emphasis on desktop here, folks. Looks as though the Linux desktop is live and well. The new KDE 3.0 desktop features KOffice 1.1.1 and an improved Konqueror browser and file manager. And for you Mozilla fans, SuSE Linux 8.0 is expected to ship with Mozilla 0.9.8 and Netscape 4.79. Here are the nuts and bolts of the SuSE Press Release announcing the upcoming SuSE Linux 8.0.
